MPC-QT is for people who prefer the familiar layout and keyboard shortcuts of MPC-HC but want video playback handled by a modern engine. It is a community-developed, open-source media player built with Qt and libmpv, rather than DirectShow filters and codec packs. It is available for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Linux.
For daily use, MPC-QT keeps the classic menus and viewing workflow while adding practical tools such as separate playlists for different shows and seekbar previews. A playlist can retain its own last-played position, making it easier to return to the right point without disturbing progress in another show.
Playback and browsing features
The libmpv engine is responsible for playback, replacing the DirectShow-based approach associated with the original MPC-HC environment. This distinction matters for users whose setup depends on particular DirectShow filters: MPC-QT does not support those filters, including madVR. Its familiar interface does not mean that every part of the older playback architecture is reproduced.
Seek previews help with navigation through a video. Hovering over the seek bar displays a preview image, so viewers can inspect a point in the timeline before choosing it. This is useful when moving between scenes or trying to resume near a specific moment without repeatedly seeking and checking the playback position.
MPC-QT can also play links from video sites through yt-dlp. Online playback depends on that utility, so users who rely on this feature need to keep yt-dlp installed and up to date. It is separate from ordinary playback of local media.
Familiar controls and current limitations
The program reproduces most of MPC-HC’s interface and behaviour, including its menus, options, and keyboard shortcuts. This can make the transition straightforward for people accustomed to that layout. However, some MPC-HC features have not been implemented. Such options may be hidden or disabled in the settings dialog, so the familiar arrangement should not be taken as a guarantee that every legacy setting is available.
MPC-QT releases use date-based version numbers: for example, 26.07 means July 2026. The project’s ongoing development brings changes over time, but users who need a specific MPC-HC option should check whether it is implemented rather than assume it is present.
Installation and licensing
Windows releases are available as an installer and as a portable win-x64 zip. The portable archive is suitable for running the program without using the installer. Continuous development builds are intended for testing unreleased changes, so they are less appropriate for users who want a regular release.
MPC-QT is open source under the GNU GPL v2. Its combination of an MPC-HC-style interface, independent playlists, timeline previews, and libmpv playback makes it most relevant to users who value the familiar controls but do not depend on DirectShow filters or on MPC-HC options that have not yet been reproduced.
